The Open Mat NCAA Division I Coach of the Year: Mike Grey

The Open Mat presents awards annually in three categories for each division of college wrestling at the conclusion of the season. Awards are presented for Wrestler of the Year, Freshman of the Year and Coach of the Year.

The Open Mat NCAA Division I Coach of the Year: Mike Grey (Cornell)

Second-year head coach Mike Grey guided Cornell to one of the program's most successful wrestling seasons ever. The Big Red finished third at the 2023 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and crowned two individual national champions, Vito Arujau (133) and Yianni Diakomihalis (149), and four All-Americans. Arujau came through to win the title at 133 pounds as the No. 3 seed, beating 2021 world silver medalist Daton Fix of Oklahoma State in the national semifinals before defeating two-time NCAA champion Roman Bravo-Young of Penn State in the NCAA finals. He was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Wrestler. Diakomihalis, a 2022 world silver medalist in freestyle, became just the fifth four-time NCAA Division I wrestling champion and the second Cornell wrestler to accomplish the feat, joining Kyle Dake, who won four NCAA titles in four different weight classes from 2010 to 2013. Cornell is now the only college wrestling program with multiple-time four-time NCAA Division I champions. In addition, Grey guided Cornell to its 42nd Ivy League wrestling title. The Big Red finished 12-3 in dual meets this season. Cornell dominated at the EIWA Wrestling Championships, crowning six champions and winning the team title by 45 points. Grey was also honored as the 2023 NWCA National Coach of the Year and Ivy League Coach of the Year for the second straight season.
