McGeary announced as 2025 NCAA Division II Wrestler of the Year

The Open Mat presents awards annually in three categories for each division of college wrestling at the conclusion of the season. Awards are presented for Freshman of the Year, Coach of the Year and Wrestler of the Year.

Ty McGeary of West Liberty will go down as one of the all-time greats in NCAA Division II wrestling.

He capped off his college wrestling career in 2025 by winning his third NCAA title at 184 pounds and earning Outstanding Wrestler honors.

On Tuesday, McGeary was announced as the 2025 NCAA Division II Wrestler of the Year.

McGeary won regular season tournament titles at the Mount Union Invitational, Fairmont State Open and Mountain East Championships.

He captured a Super Region 3 title at 184 pounds by going 4-0, which included two pins, a major decision and a decision.

McGeary opened his final national tournament with a first-period pin. He followed it up with a major decision in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, McGeary shut out Augustana's Cade Mueller, 2-0. He then claimed his third national title with a 20-4 technical fall victory over Keegan Gehlhausen of Chadron State. McGeary was named Outstanding Wrestler of the national tournament.

He finished the season with a 33-1 record and was undefeated against Division II competition. Of his 33 wins, 29 were bonus-point victories. McGeary concluded his college wrestling career as a three-time NCAA champion and four-time All-American. He compiled a career record of 132-7 record, which included a 66-1 mark over his final two seasons.
