Iowa adds world bronze medalist Burkert to coaching staff
World bronze medalist Jenna Burkert has been named an assistant coach for the University of Iowa women's wrestling program, head coach Clarissa Chun announced Friday.
Burkert was a four-time World Team member, a nine-time Senior National Team member, and a three-time Junior National Team member during her competitive career. She also finished as runner-up at the 2021 Olympic Trials at 57 kilograms. Her final competition came at the 2022 World Cup in Coralville.
Since 2024, Burkert has coached and taught a leadership course at Bixby High School in Oklahoma. She joined the program as associate head coach before being elevated to head coach, leading Bixby to a No. 2 national ranking and coaching six individual state champions.
In addition to her coaching experience, Burkert served as a non-commissioned officer and soldier-athlete in the United States Army World Class Athlete Program (WCAP) from January 2015 to August 2024. She was promoted to Staff Sergeant in 2022.
During her military career, Burkert earned the Meritorious Service Medal for leadership, service, and performance, as well as the Army Commendation Medal for her performance at the 2021 Wrestling World Championships.
She also assisted with coaching WCAP's women's freestyle program, helping develop multiple Senior National Team athletes and a World Team member, while mentoring junior soldiers in leadership and professional development.
A native of Rocky Point, New York, Burkert earned her bachelor's degree from Southern New Hampshire University in 2023. She is currently pursuing a master's degree in educational leadership and administration from Oklahoma State.
She has also completed the Advanced Leadership Course at the U.S. Army Logistics University (2022) and the Basic Leader Course at the NCO Academy (2019), and holds a Mental Performance Certification in Peak Performance.
