Iowa, UNI renew rivalry with 'Dual in the Dome' set for Dec. 11
Iowa and Northern Iowa will renew one of college wrestling's longest-dormant in-state rivalries on Dec. 11, when the Hawkeyes travel to Cedar Falls for "Dual in the Dome" at the UNI-Dome, presented by Journeymen Wrestling.
The dual marks Iowa's first trip to Cedar Falls since 2010 and the first meeting between the two programs since 2011, closing a 15-year gap in a series that dates back to 1930. Iowa holds a commanding 44-8-2 edge in the all-time series, and December's dual will be the 55th meeting between the programs. The matchup kicks off a two-year home-and-home series, with UNI set to visit Carver-Hawkeye Arena during the 2027-28 season on a date still to be determined.
For UNI, the dual represents a chance to reconnect with a rival just down the road while building momentum off a season that saw the Panthers finish 11-8 in duals, go 4-4 against Big 12 competition and send five wrestlers to the NCAA Championships. Iowa, meanwhile, remains one of the sport's flagship programs, closing this past season at 12-6 in duals with a 5-3 Big Ten mark, 10 NCAA qualifiers and seven All-Americans.
Journeymen Wrestling founder Frank Popolizio helped broker the matchup, drawing comparisons to other marquee rivalries like Oklahoma State-Oklahoma, Iowa-Iowa State and Army-Navy. FloWrestling will carry exclusive live coverage of the event.
Ticket access begins in stages. UNI season ticket holders who have renewed for 2026-27, along with those holding new season ticket deposits, get presale access and a 20 percent discount starting Wednesday, July 22. The dual is not included in standard UNI wrestling season ticket packages or youth ticket programs and will be sold as a standalone event. Full-time, fee-paying UNI students can attend for free. General public tickets go on sale Wednesday, Aug. 5, with seating options and pricing to be announced later. A sellout crowd is expected inside the UNI-Dome.
